"FOUR PAWS’ big cat sanctuary LIONSROCK provides an appropriate, lifelong home for big cats that were kept in inadequate conditions in zoos, circuses or private captivity. The habitat constructed for the predators offers highest standards including large areas for family groups, facilitation of natural behavior through enrichment and highest standards of medical care as well as highest security standards of enclosures. At the FOUR PAWS sanctuary hunting, trading or breeding of wild animals is strictly prohibited. All male lions are vasectomized as lions raised in captivity cannot be released into the wild.
LIONSROCK was officially opened in February 2008. Three months afterwards, the first group of European lions arrived. The area was initially an asparagus and maize farm and was transformed into a game reserve and lodge in 1998. In November 2006, it was taken over by the international welfare organization FOUR PAWS and construction of new enclosures as well as upgrading of infrastructure took a year before the first new inhabitants could move in.
LIONSROCK is open for the public and is a unique combination of animal welfare and tourism destination, offering a wide range of activities for its guests: game drives, bird watching and hiking trails as well as trips to the nearby Golden Gate National Park, Clarens or Lesotho. LIONSROCK Lodge with its restaurant and bar is situated inside the park and offers accommodation for about 55 guests ranging from self-catering chalets to double rooms."
